A Parent's Guide to the Best Children's Videos

A unique collaboration between the not-for-profit Coalition for Quality Children's Media and Mars Publishing, who publishes an extensive series of Parent's Guides, A Parent's Guide to the Best Children's Videos provides age-appropriate ratings and illustrated reviews for more than 1800 videos, DVDs and CD-ROMs in an easy-to-use format in everyday language.

Chapters are organized into six age groups for quick reference, and are introduced by leading child development specialists including Dr. Irving Lazar, Professor Emeritus, Cornell University; Bettye Caldwell, Arkansas Children's Hospital; and Martha Dewing, Children's Video Report. Parents can be confident they are selecting quality media when they choose a title from A Parent's Guide to the Best Children's Videos because every title has earned the KIDS FIRST! endorsement.

While the entertainment industry's rating systems focus only on objectionable content such as violence, language and gratuitous sex, KIDS FIRST! goes a step further and evaluates titles for beneficial aspects as well. KIDS FIRST! does not censor media nor give bad ratings – it either endorses a title or it doesn't. The KIDS FIRST! endorsement is comparable to the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

KIDS FIRST! is an evaluation and rating initiative of the Coalition for Quality Children's Media that uses a highly acclaimed method involving professionally designed criteria and tools and a volunteer jury of both adults and children.

More than 300 hundred adult professionals – including child development and child media specialists, librarians, and teachers – and more than 3000 kids of diverse backgrounds are trained as media evaluators. Their actual comments and responses are incorporated into each review.
