Math Goodies Enliven Online Learning for Kids with Cancer
A major difficulty for children with cancer is keeping up with their schoolwork when they are in the hospital or at home during treatment. That's why @neWorld, a Website developed for pediatric cancer patients, has been designed with a School Zone that provides online links between a child and his school, as well as a collection of Web-based curriculum.
A highlight of @neWorld's curriculum is Math Goodies, a comprehensive set of interactive math activities donated to @neWorld by Mrs. Glosser's Math Goodies, Inc. The content for Math Goodies, available on the Internet and CD-ROM, has been adapted for @neWorld by Leap of Faith Technologies, Inc., developer of the @neWorld application.
@neWorld has been designed to meet specific social and emotional needs of children age 10-15 who are going through treatment for cancer, says Barbara Rapchak, CEO of Leap of Faith, based in Crystal Lake, IL. Key among these needs is maintaining contact with their schools during treatment, so in the School Zone we've incorporated ways for children to communicate with teachers and have presented grade- appropriate lessons and activities.
Math Goodies lessons include topics in geometry, numbers and number theory, probability, pre-algebra, and statistics. Illustrated examples describe each topic, with interactive tests that allow students to enter their answers and score themselves online. Ninety pages of exercises are provided.
In addition to math curriculum, @neWorld includes school activities in art, foreign language, health, language arts, science, and social studies. Course materials in these subjects have been donated to @neWorld by over 20 companies, museums, government agencies, and educators.
