New York City To Slash Services For Children and Families
While New York City residents are making sacrifices
through higher property taxes, fees and fines, and are learning to live with fewer city
services, the well-being of New York City children remains far behind that of their statewide
and national peers.
Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York called for
additional aid from Albany as serious concerns about the impact of budget cuts were raised
this morning in meetings with Legislators and at a press conference at the Capitol.
Through the late 1990s, conditions were improving for many of our children, then 9/11
dealt a devastating blow to the city, said Gail B. Nayowith, Executive Director of Citizens’
Committee for Children of New York.
Keeping Track shows that there are escalating
numbers of children being born into poverty and dangerously high rates of unemployment
affecting family life. Now, the pressure to bridge the city’s $3 billion budget gap is forcing
policymakers to put child care, school, health and youth services on the chopping block.
