Bold Attempt at Creating a Kids-Friendly Internet
EnCirca, Inc., accredited registrar for the Kids.us Internet Domain, announced that it registered the first domain names for Kids.us.
There are strict guidelines that every Kids.us website must satisfy, according to Thomas Barrett, CEO of EnCirca. The intent is that the Kids.us domain, along with the Truth in Domains Act also recently passed by Congress, will help shield our kids from accessing inappropriate content.
Last year, when President George W. Bush signed legislation creating Kids.us, he said:
Every site will be a safe zone for children. We must give our nation's children every opportunity to grow in knowledge without undermining their character. We must give parents the peace of mind knowing their children are learning in safety.
The launch of the Kids.us domain coincides with the recent arrest of the Internet's most notorious typo-squatter. Typo-squatting is when common misspellings of popular websites, including child-oriented destinations, direct the user instead to a myriad of pay-for-click websites, oftentimes of adult-related content.
Kids.us helps solves this problem by creating a directory of Kids-friendly websites at www.kids.us. One of the domain's requirements prevents linking to non-Kids.us websites. As a parent, you set your browser default to www.kids.us. Your child can then browse the list of age-appropriate websites.
EnCirca is proud to be an accredited registrar for Kids.us, says Barrett. Kids.us is a bold attempt at creating a Kids-friendly Internet. As a parent of four Internet-savvy kids, this is a service I will use for my own family.
