Third Annual Safe Kids Safety Fair
To help kids learn how to stay safe, and to teach their families about preventable injury
(the leading killer of children ages 14 and under) the Salt Lake County SAFE KIDS Coalition
will host an interactive safety fair, Seasons for Safety.
Each year in the United States more than 6,300 children age 14 and under die from
unintentional injuries of all types, and nearly 120,000 are permanently disabled, said Bob
Jeppesen, Salt Lake County SAFE KIDS Coordinator.
The safety fair will challenge families to
participate in a variety of interactive, FUN games, designed to educate them about safety in the
home, at play and while traveling.
The SAFE KIDS Fair will be held at the new South Towne Exposition Center at
9400 South State street. Free tickets are
available in advance from Mountain America Credit Union, Albertson's stores and the Salt
Lake Valley Health Department. Admission the day of the event is $5 for adults.
Children
under 14 are free but must be accompanied by an adult. Entry forms to win child safety
seats, bike helmets, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and gunlocks will be provided, and
prizes will be awarded throughout the day. Thousands of traffic and fire safety magazines from
the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, along with a parent's guide to learn how to keep children
safe, will be distributed to participants.
The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office will sponsor a
bicycle and scooter rodeo, along with crime prevention information. Other areas will include a
junior firefighter combat challenge, the Life Safety Trailer and other activities sponsored by the
Salt Lake County Fire Department. Parents will learn how to correctly install child safety seats.
Other attractions will include clowns, face painting, climbing wall, bingo game, the living
planet aquarium and plenty of entertainment.
Vince and Larry, the crash-test dummies, and
other mascots will also be present at various times during the day. K-9 dogs, police and fire
vehicles, along with motorcycles will round out the event.
